I do think the Herald Mage Series is the top of the list of published books that display fanfiction-level angst, which I have read. I think it more telling that M wrote herself into the Herald Spy series, and that's kind of hilarious (as I said above). I think I read somewhere once that Van was physically based on Michael Praed. Certainly the book covers make me think of Robin of Loxley.
But isn't that űber whump essentially a phase that many writers go through, though? I've read fanfic, at a h/c level which ramps to the next level of torture (and I, personally, bale).
I don't necessarily think that the fanfic author who describes in loving, high def. detail how a bad guy takes a baseball bat to Blair Sandburg's knee, is sharing their ID. I am a little disturbed. If they kept doing it, I’d wonder, though.
I just stabbed Danny Williams in the abdomen, metaphorically speaking – I’m not going to go around stabbing RL people in the stomach.
